Quartz Composer & Behringer BCF-2000 MIDI controller tests

A year ago I explored visual control by plugging a generic Behringer BCF2000 MIDI controller in Apple’s Quartz Composer. My initial intention was to drive some animations and visuals during Cool Cavemen‘s live concerts. Now that’s I’ve abandonned the idea of using Quartz Composer, it’s time to share these stuff with you.

So here is my MIDI playground:

Nothing exceptionnal to see here. It’s just a bunch of dumb patches to control the color of the background screen and its intensity. The latter can be modulated by pulses with different profiles, and also by the sound captured by the MacBook‘s microphone. The source composition is downloadable.

Just for the sake of it, I’ve recorded a quick and dirty demo with my Canon 7D (set to 1080p, 25 fps and 1/50 shutter speed) and the fantastic Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8:

The audio is sourced from Jamendo. It’s the track One Year written by Paolo Lunardi for his album Essential, and released under a Creative Common BY-SA v3.0 license (thus making my video subject to the same license).

Optical illusion: circles in motion (SVG source included)

Here is an optical illusion I generated with Inkscape. I created this file some years ago and found it recently while cleaning my archives.

Using a contrast trick it appears that circles are in motions. Click on the image below to get a full-size preview:

Cool Cavemen, les Creative Commons et moi

Après plusieurs semaines d’absence sur ce blog, je suis de retour avec un billet pour une fois en français. Il s’agit juste d’annoncer la mise en ligne d’une interview de Cool Cavemen à laquelle j’ai participé.

L’interview à été réalisée pour le second épisode de Paroles d’Artistes, une emission proposée par OxyRadio, une webradio libre retransmise sur Freebox. Diffusée vendredi dernier, l’interview est désormais disponible sous forme de podcast.

Pour résumer mon intervention, j’explique comment et pourquoi j’ai conseillé au groupe de distribuer leurs compositions sous une licence Creative Commons. Bref, une interview sympa, même si au final je me rend compte que je suis un peu rouillé. J’ai vraiment besoin de pratiquer plus régulièrement l’exercice !

New CD Jewel Case Template ready to Print !

I’ve added two new documents to my CD Templates for Jewel Case in SVG. The new versions are a leaflet and a back cover with margin markers only. This version is designed for final printing: thanks to markers it’s easy to cut and fold the paper with high precision.

My friends, the Cool Cavemen band, are on the way to complete the sound recording phase of their next LP. Now come the time to think about the CD artwork, and to package the music they’ve choose the standard Jewel Case format.

Jewel Cases are made of a part which hold the CD itself. This part is usually black and opaque and it remain visible on the left of the front side when the CD case is closed.

Sometimes this black strip is made of transparent polystyrene, which let you see the reverse of the back cover. You can use this to make some easthetic design. So I’ve created some templates in Inkscape, because all templates I found on the web didn’t taken care of that transparent strip.
